You Are God’s Servant
by Rev. Rebecca R. Belt
Clergy Appreciation Month, October 2003
You serve God
when you envision hope in the midst of turmoil,
you glimpse mercy instead of misery
and you view others with the Father’s eyes.
You serve God
when you lend an ear for someone’s story,
hearing the anguish of their struggle
and discerning God whispering comfort.
You serve God
when you convey meaning amid meaninglessness,
by sharing the Lord’s wisdom
and proclaiming Christ’s grace-filled love.
You serve God
when you ache with those who mourn,
rejoice with those who celebrate
and give from your heart as Jesus gave.
You serve God
when you reach out with a warm touch,
wrapping the wounded in tenderness
and anointing them with Gilead’s healing balm.
You serve God
when you bend down to be with the lowly,
carrying their burdens
and you kneel praying before the Holy One.
You serve God
when you are a companion on the journey,
walking in the moccasins of another
and you follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
You are God’s servant.
