If You Must Go, and I Must Stay
by Rev. Dr. Terry Irish
July 2000

If you must go through valleys dark,
   and face the cancer’s fright;
I’d want to be there for you,
   to see you through the night.

If you must go through treatments hard,
   and cope with pain so long;
I’d want to share each day with you,
   to help you to be strong.

If you must go through surgery,
   and face the loss of health;
I’d be there to offer prayers for you,
   and love you as myself.

If you must leave this life behind,
   and pass through Heaven’s gate;
I’ll come Home too, in God’s good time,
   and there, we’ll celebrate.

This poem is dedicated to my Mother, Miriam E. Irish, who is an inspiration to me, after beating breast cancer twice in her lifetime.
